Distinct Puppy Personalities

One of the best parts of coming home, outside of seeing my husband of course, is getting to see my fur babies after a long day at work. They always get so excited and are so happy when I walk through the door. Their tails are thumping frantically and they are trying their hardest to get rubs from me. It’s amazing just how much love and affection dogs can show their owners.

It’s crazy to think that the twins are four now. I remember getting them and seriously struggling during the puppy stage. The fact that there were two of them at the same time made it even worse. You’d think they’d be listening to you and learning how to be chill, but as soon as you turned your back, they were wrestling each other or causing havoc again.

I wouldn’t trade my two puppy pitbulls for anything in the world. While they are a massive responsibility, they bring so much fun and joy to my daily life that they are well worth the headaches, pain, frustration, and extra effort. They both have their distinct personalities that keep things interesting at all times and I couldn’t imagine having only one of them.

Sasha is a super glutton and will eat literally any and everything, to her detriment. We literally have to monitor her food intake to make sure she isn’t overeating. That doesn’t stop her from keeping a watchful eye whenever anyone is eating though and she’s definitely not above edging out her sister to get an extra snack.

She used to steal her sister’s treats and food when she was younger, but my husband put his foot down and miraculously stopped the thief. We can leave food in Nala’s bowl for the entire day and Sasha won’t mess with it, even if we go somewhere. It’s amazing to finally have a little piece of mind that she’s not eating her food, her sister’s food, and still begging for more as if she’s famished.

Nala on the other hand is pretty finicky about food. She will definitely let us know if we’re feeding her too much because she’ll randomly start skipping meals. When she’s on a hunger strike, I usually have to hand feed her just to get her to actually eat something. On the flip side, when we’re giving her just enough food but not too much, she usually eats every time we feed her.

To help spur her inspiration to eat consistently, we’ve even started buying two different bags of dog food. We do our best to not give her the same exact food twice a day and it’s been helping keep things interesting for her to actually eat like she’s supposed to. She’ll get one bag for breakfast and the other bag for dinner and surprisingly enough, she’s been really liking the variety.

Before we actually implemented the two bag policy, we always kept one bag unopened in our pantry just so they’d never run out of food. Since they have skin allergies and certain foods break them out, we can’t just go to the store and pick up a random bag of food without doing some research and checking the ingredients first. A lot of the bags they eat now get ordered from Tractor Supply and we have to wait a few days until it gets delivered to the store.

I always used to joke that Nala wanted one food for breakfast and another food for dinner. I never thought I’d see the day when that theory was tested and actually proven correct. Since we’ve been spicing things up, she very rarely skips meals now. The only time she’ll actively hold out on eating her food is when I cook breakfast on the weekends because she knows I’ll save her a little piece of either turkey bacon or turkey sausage and crumble it in her bowl. She goes absolutely crazy for it.

My husband and I eventually want to get a third dog, but I honestly want to wait until I have more work-from-home flexibility to raise it. I wouldn’t want all the responsibility to be on him or have to find someone to take care of the three while we were both at work. We want another girl Amstaff, but gray this time. We randomly call out good names for her, but we’ll definitely have to make that decision when we get her in our hands.

It’ll be so interesting seeing how Nala and Sasha react to the new puppy since they’ve always only had each other. They don’t interact with other dogs or animals unless they’re at the vet or the groomers, and I always wonder who will be the most protective and who will have to get checked for too much roughhousing. No matter what though, I know they’ll love her just as much as my husband and I will.
